The word “Hadesh” in Hebrew (חַדֵּשׁ) means to renew. This word takes on an additional context in Hebrew. It is not merely a descriptor or a passive verb. It is a call to action, an imperative. Make new! Become new!
Judaism is entering an unprecedented era. One that our editor calls the “post-diaspora”. New realities become ever more apparent, and questions come to the fore:
How does a religion that primarily survived in Exile cope with independence?
What does authentic Jewish self-expression look like?
Can Halacha be used to govern our state?
Does indigeneity matter?
Hadesh seeks to answer these questions by bringing together young Jewish culture makers, such as musicians, artists, poets, critics, and intellectuals together to ask the hard questions, get to the bottom of them, and reinvigorate Jewish life.
Jews have a unique opportunity, for the first time in two thousand years, to define themselves on our own terms. Hadesh seeks to take up the call of the Prophet Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) and help facilitate that.
We hope you can join us.
